Gulf Consult in association with Morganti were commissioned by Kuwait Authority for Public Partnership Projects to undertake the master planning and full design of nine schools and one swimming pool complex.

The design adopted a sensitive approach and interpretation of the project brief, within the local culture and climate of Kuwait. Initial research in the early stages of design studied the typologies of local educational design, throughout recent
history. The design approach to the architecture is focused on creating environments, in which children and young adults can flourish. The schools are designed to be centred on the human condition and be as flexible as possible, with the children’s wellbeing and learning experience at the core of the idea.

The physical environment is meant to provide a platform for educational activities to occur, towards improving the learning capabilities and wellbeing of the students. Prototypically, the layouts are based around a series of internal courtyards, which provide accommodation spaces deeper in the plan, to benefit from a connection to the natural environment. Natural light, ventilation and a democratic hierarchy of space are fundamental to the conceptual layout of the schools.

The main components of the Project are:

  • Nine new schools consisting of Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary schools on nine sites located across the city
  • One Olympic-sized swimming pool, conforming to international FINA Standards
